At Backstage Health, we believe that healthy students are better positioned to learn, grow, and succeed. Student health is not separate from education—it is a critical foundation for academic achievement.
That's why we were honored to be featured on Fox 5|KUSI News in recognition of School Nurse Day—a moment that provided an opportunity to highlight the vital role School Nurses play in supporting students, families, and school communities every day.
While classrooms are often viewed as the center of education, student success begins with health, safety, and well-being. School Nurses serve as essential members of educational teams, helping ensure students are healthy, supported, and ready to learn.
"School Nurses play a critical role in keeping students safe, healthy, and ready to learn. From managing chronic health conditions to responding to emergencies, they provide essential support that helps students succeed every day." — Miguel Angel Del Villar, BSN, RN, CSN CEO, Backstage Health
More Than a Health Office
Today's School Nurses provide far more than first aid and medication administration.
They participate in IEP and 504 meetings, develop health care plans, support students with chronic medical conditions, conduct health assessments, coordinate care with families and healthcare providers, oversee vision and hearing screenings, train school staff, and help schools meet important compliance requirements.
In many cases, School Nurses are among the first professionals to identify health-related barriers that may impact a student's ability to learn and thrive.
Their work touches every aspect of the educational experience, helping remove health-related barriers that can impact attendance, learning, and student success.
Advocating for Student Health
The Fox 5|KUSI News feature was an opportunity to bring greater awareness to a profession that often works behind the scenes.
School Nurses serve as advocates, educators, care coordinators, and trusted resources for students and families. Their impact extends beyond individual health concerns and contributes directly to attendance, educational access, student engagement, and overall school success.
As student needs continue to evolve, access to qualified school health professionals has become increasingly important for districts and charter schools throughout California.
A Shared Mission
At Backstage Health, our mission is simple: Empowering Student Access to Health and Education.
We believe every student deserves access to the healthcare services and support necessary to fully participate in their education. Through School Nursing, Behavioral Health, and Student Support Services, we partner with schools to help remove barriers to learning and promote student success.
Every day, our team collaborates with educators, administrators, families, and healthcare providers to ensure students receive the services they need to thrive both academically and personally.
Being recognized by Fox 5|KUSI News was an honor, but the recognition truly belongs to the School Nurses, healthcare professionals, and school teams who make a difference in students' lives every day.
More importantly, it reflects a growing understanding that student health and academic achievement are deeply connected—and that investing in student wellness is an investment in educational success.
Looking Toward the Future
As education continues to evolve, so do the opportunities to support students through innovative healthcare solutions. From traditional campuses to virtual learning environments, Backstage Health remains committed to helping schools expand access to the services students need to thrive.
We are honored to support schools throughout California and proud to stand alongside the School Nurses, healthcare professionals, educators, and families who work every day to improve student outcomes.
